Baliem Valley – Stone Age Culture
The Baliem Highlands is centered on the Grand Valley some 1,600 meters above sea level. Temperatures of the highland are ranged from 26 degrees Celsius at the day time and 12 degrees at night.. The valley is 60 kilometers long and 15 kilometers wide and is surrounded on all sides by mountain peaks rising to between 2,500 and 3,000 meters.This valley has been the most visited part of the island, especially in recent years. This valley is home to the Dani tibesmen. They are living in primitive way of farming.
Baliem Valley Festival
Baliem festival is the main even festival held in August (generally between 9 -14 August). The highlight of the festival is the mock tribal fighting where men from villages dress up in full traditional custom (regalia). The festival also feature plenty of traditional dancing, as well as Dani music. Feats of pigs cooked using hot rock, pig races, flower festival, exhibitions of traditional archery are also an integral part.
BALIEM VALLEY 5 DAYS / 4 NIGHTS
DAY 01. JAYAPURA ARRIVAL – FLY TO WAMENA
Upon arrival at Sentani Airport then catch Merpati 2nd flight to Wamena at noon. After check in at hotel and then have lunch at local restaurant in Wamena. You may visit villages around Wamena including traditional market and back to hotel for relaxing before going for dinner. This is only the first day to give you idea the Baliem Valley and its people look like. O/N : at hotel in Wamena (L, D).
DAY 02. WAMENA — KURIMA-WAMENA
After breakfast at hotel drive to Sogokmo (35 minutes) then start to have a day trekking passing some sweet potato fields and enjoy the gorgeous scenery surroundings. You will get to Kurima, the Sub District of the tribe and along the trail you will meet the local people with friendly smiles in their traditional clothes. After picnic lunch, heading back to Sogokmo where the cars pick you up for Wamena. Dinner at local restaurant in town & overnight at hotel (Walk approx. 5 hours, B, L, D).
DAY 03. WAMENA — JIWIKA-WAMENA
Breakfast at hotel, driving north to Jiwika, a village well – known with its old smoked mummy. You may explore the traditional village around, or climb the Mili Mountain where salt pool exists on top. Here you will learn how the locals doing their traditional way to process salt. Lunch served en route. At noon enjoy a local performance such as Mocked War and traditional Earth Oven Cooking. You may also be interacted with the local Dani people and learn about their way of life. Back to Wamena late in the afternoon and have dinner at the local restaurant in town. DAY 04. WAMENA — JAYAPURA
After breakfast at hotel, leaving for Wamena Airport to get Merpati 1st Flight to Jayapura. The flight takes about 50 minutes and at Sentani Airport you will be picked up and checked in at Sentani Indah Hotel. You may have a full day sightseeing tour including Mac Arthur 2nd Worl War Monument, Sentani Lake and its small islands, museum, and Hamadi Market. Lunch served at a restaurant by the lake. Back to hotel late in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight at hotel. (B, L, D).
DAY 05. JAYAPURA — DEPARTURE
Leaving at hotel after breakfast for Sentani Airport. Depart on your destination. End of Service (B).
