Orangutan Wildlife & River Safari

Orangutan (pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus sp.) living free at their natural home at Camp Leakey, Tanjung Harapan and Pondok Tanguy stations at Tanjung Puting National Park. You can do trekking around rehabilitation centers for an encounter with the orangutans and the other endemic species of Kalimantan. In the peaceful afternoon, we cruise the river to watch the proboscis monkeys, birds and other wildlife animals playing in trees he riverbanks while you enjoying your afternoon tea in the roof of the boat.

Many of past clients call this is a “magical trip”. We will take you to meet one of the human’s closest living relatives to meet one of the human’s closest living relatives in animal kingdoms: Orangutans inside the misty rain forest surrounded by proboscis monkeys, macaques, gibbons, birds including the giant hornbills and other exotic flora and fauna. You will explore the quit river on a traditional boat (“African Queen” river boat style) and having some short walk around the stations.

During this tour, overnight will be in Rimba Lodge or on the 2 x 6 meter wide boat, the Klotok. We suggest you to spend 01 night (or more) on the boat for a better opportunity watching the animals in the wild, such as: orangutan, groups of proboscis monkey-the red big nose monkey, macaques and various kind of Borneo endemic & migrant birds. The best time to watch them on early morning or late afternoon on the trees along the both sides of the narrow Sekonyer River. You will sleep accompany by the singing of the night birds, fire fly, smell of the jungle, and…It’s time to watch the crocodile at night! In the morning you will be waked up by the morning dew and the concert of tropical rain forest creatures.

The boat is spacious 6 x 2 meters, which forms a roof and accommodates up to 7 peoples. You can sleep on it or inside the boat separated with the guides and the boat crews. Clean mattresses, pillows, mosquito net and a simple toilet are provided on board. By our experience in operating this trip, most of our clients were rather spent 01 night (or more) on the boat. A healthy meals is prepared by our expert cooks.

Orangutan Tours: 4 Days / 3 Nights Program

Day 01: Jakarta –  Pangkalan Bun – Orangutan
Fly to Pangkalan Bun . Upon arrival at Pangkalan Bun Airport , you will be picked up by our local staff and take you to Kumai for 20 minutes board on the boat. The boat is a traditional Klotok wooden river boat about 12 m by 2.5 m with a roof  which forms the upper deck where you can view the rain forest as it glides by. The guide’s team includes the boatman, a cook and expert guide. In the peaceful afternoon we will slowly explore the quite river by the klotok while observe the wildlife such as a long noses monkey, long tail macaque, birds along riverside. . Dinner and overnight on the boat, simple mattress, pillow, fine meals, bottled “mineral”, mosquito net, kitchen, simple toilet available on boat besides the familiar-helpful guides and boatmen (L,D).

Day 02: Park – Camp Leakey – Boat
After breakfast board the klotok to travel up river for about 21/2 hours boating and then up a side creek through tea colored water where you will see the magnificent reflection from the vegetation along the river, when lucky with us, the fresh water crocodile and other wildlife attraction could find a long river bank. Depart at Camp Leakey where the older orangutans are reintroduced into the rain forest and also known as research center for Orangutan. Trekking through tropical rainforest search wildlife, wild orangutan, birds, and other rainforest animals as well as tropical jungle plant. Back to the boat for lunch then witness feeding time at 14.00 p, for old rehabilitation orangutan given additional foods. Overnight on the boad around croc net. (B,L, D).

Day 03 : Boat – Pondok Tangkuy – Tanjung Harapan

After breakfast board the klotok to travel up the river for Pondok Tanguy, the rehabilitation center for ex-captive orangutans, see feeding time at 09.00 am. Hike through the forest of Pondok Tanggui searching for wildlife including wild orangutan, birds and others. Afterward continuing the trip to Pesalat reforestation camp. See the process o freforestation project. Afternoon visit Tanjung Harapan Rehabilitation center to witness feeding time for rehabilitation orangutan at 15.00 free afternoon program, we could visit village neary by park. Overnight on the boat (B, L, D)

(Additional program when the weather is good, night walking around Pesalat or Pondok Tanggui searching for noctural animal & glowing mushroom or just boat slowly down the river for fireflies)

Day 04 : Boat – Kumai – Pangkalan Bun Airport – Jakarta

Free morning program until time transfer to Kumai then to Pangkalan Bun airport to Jakarta (B)
